Lib Dems push to protect Wokingham’s Post Office amid TGJones closure fears.

Lead councillor for business, Cllr Mark Ashwell (Lib Dem), confirmed actions being taken to protect against possible disruption to Post Office services in Wokingham town.

Residents are understandably concerned about the future of Wokingham’s town centre Post Office following announcements from TGJones - the high street chain formerly known as WH Smith - that they plan to close 150 of their 470 nationwide as part of a company-wide restructuring.  

The uncertainty follows a national restructuring by TG Jones, which is expected to lead to job losses and affect services hosted within some stores, including Post Office counters. 

Cllr Jane Ainslie, Westcott Ward raised the issue at July’s council meeting:

‘I and other residents are concerned about the potential loss of the vital Post Office service at the heart of our community.”

Responding, Cllr Mark Ashwell, Executive Member for Economic Development, Sport, Leisure, Countryside and the Arts confirmed that the Post Office has indicated it is “determined to remain” in Wokingham and is working with council officers and local businesses to identify alternative options if the TG Jones store closes. He added: 

“We are also making representations to TG Jones  to highlight the importance of the Wokingham store and the Post Office service it hosts.”

TG Jones has confirmed that any potential store closures or role reductions will be subject to  appropriate consultation. If there are implications for the Post Office service, the Post Office is expected to follow its own community engagement process and keep residents informed. 

This situation reflects decisions being taken by a national retailer, not the strength of Wokingham town centre. Our town is continuing to evolve and thrive, and the council is focused on working with partners to secure the best outcome for residents and protect this important local service. 

Cllr Ashwell added: “Wokingham remains a vibrant and successful town, with many independent and national businesses serving residents. Council resources are limited, but we remain committed to supporting our town centre businesses and protecting resident access to vital services like the Post Office”
