Liberal Democrats helping make Dinton Pastures more accessible

Everyone should be able to enjoy our parks and green spaces, regardless of age or disability. 

That’s why the Liberal Democrat administration has expanded the mobility scooter scheme at Dinton Pastures, helping more residents experience everything the park has to offer. 

Increasing the number of scooters from one to three is a simple but important improvement, making it easier for more people to enjoy time outdoors, spend time with family and friends, and make the most of one of Wokingham Borough’s most popular parks. 

The scheme provides mobility scooters for people who find walking difficult because of disability, injury or older age. After a one-off registration and safety induction, users can book a scooter free of charge throughout the week. 

Liberal Democrat Councillor Beth Rowland, who uses a mobility scooter herself, recently visited Dinton Pastures to try the service. 

She said: 

“For me, it’s given me freedom. I can go all the way round Dinton in comfort, at a controllable speed, and stop and just ‘be’ for five minutes if I want to, in the shade. People can get out and enjoy the peace, the birdsong, the rustle of the wind in the trees and other people laughing. You need peace and time for yourself, and you can do that here.” 

As someone who uses a mobility scooter herself, Beth understands how much practical improvements like this can mean, giving people greater independence and ensuring more residents can enjoy everything Dinton Pastures has to offer.

Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Economic Development, Sport, Leisure and the Arts, Cllr Mark Ashwell, said: “We want everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy Dinton Pastures and the outdoors. Increasing the number of mobility scooters from one to three will help more people explore the park and spend time outdoors with family and friends.” 

This is the kind of practical change Liberal Democrats believe local councils should be making - removing barriers, improving everyday services and ensuring more people can enjoy everything our borough has to offer. Expanding the mobility scooter scheme at Dinton Pastures is another example of the Liberal Democrat administration delivering practical improvements that make a real difference to residents’ lives.
