From the Chamber: Our diversity makes Wokingham stronger

Wokingham is a wonderful place to live, not least because of the people who make up our communities. While our market town heritage remains an important part of our identity, our borough is also home to people with roots across the world. Our growing South Asian communities and the many people who have made Wokingham their home from Hong Kong are an important part of that story.

A diverse community brings enormous benefits. Different backgrounds, experiences, languages, traditions and perspectives enrich our lives. They bring new businesses, skills, ideas, food, festivals and cultural experiences. Our children grow up with a broader understanding of the world, while our workplaces and community organisations benefit from the talents and experiences of people from different walks of life.

But diversity is about more than what people contribute to our economy or the cultural life of our borough. It is also about fairness, opportunity and the simple principle that everyone deserves to feel they belong.

As a Liberal Democrat, I believe that everyone should have the freedom and opportunity to fulfil their potential, regardless of their ethnicity or background. That means challenging prejudice and racism wherever we encounter them, listening to communities whose voices are not always heard, and ensuring that public services work for everyone.

As Executive Member for Community Safety, I know that feeling safe is fundamental to feeling at home. Racist abuse, harassment and intimidation have no place in Wokingham. Strong communities are built on mutual respect, where people look out for one another and everyone can go about their daily lives without fear of being targeted because of who they are.

Building that sense of belonging takes practical action. We need opportunities for people to meet, share experiences and get involved in local life. We must listen to residents from all backgrounds when shaping council services, and make sure language or cultural barriers do not prevent people from accessing support or having their say.

Integration is a two-way process. People settling here should have opportunities to learn English, make connections and participate fully in our community. Equally, those of us who have lived here for years should be willing to welcome new neighbours and learn from their experiences.

Wokingham is at its best when everyone has the chance to contribute and everyone feels valued. Our shared future does not depend on us all being the same. It depends on treating one another with dignity, celebrating what we have in common and respecting our differences.

That is the kind of borough I want us to build: safe, welcoming and fair, where everyone belongs.
