At last Thursday's Executive meeting, the results of Wokingham Borough Council's care charges consultation were discussed. Wokingham Liberal Democrats were stunned to see that the Conservative Executive agreed to carry on with their policy to change their care charges policy, despite more than half of those responding to the consultation disagreeing that people who have over £23,250 should pay for the care they receive.

The Council's Decent Homes Project underway in Woodley is providing new kitchens and bathrooms in council-owned properties to bring these aging properties up to the government's minimum standard. This is the first upgrade the properties have had in 30 to 50 years.

At the Executive meeting on Thursday, Cllr Prue Bray, the leader of Wokingham Liberal Democrats, will be asking a question about the proposed Council job cuts. She will be asking how many Council employed staff will be made redundant and which Council services will be affected the most.

At last Thursday's Council meeting, Wokingham Liberal Democrats were astonished by the Conservative-led administration's over-optimism in recouping the £5 million of council tax payer's money it invested in the collapsed Icelandic banks. The Executive Member for Council Budgets, Anthony Pollock, confidently predicted that the Council expected to recover nearly all the £5 million investment.

Wokingham Liberal Democrats were surprised to learn that £451,000 allocated in the last financial year by Wokingham Borough Council for housing maintenance has not been spent. Instead, £400,000 of the £451,000 has been carried forward to this financial year.

The Conservative Executive on Wokingham Borough Council have set themselves the easiest of targets when it comes to bringing the Council's housing stock up to the Decent Homes Standard, as it will be met if just one house is improved between now and 2013. Despite Cllr Phil Challis' (Liberal Democrat Councillor for Loddon) questioning of the Executive about the target's smartness in January, it still remains the one to which the Council aspires.

Prue Bray, who was the Lib Dem candidate in Wokingham constituency at the General Election, was one of the Lib Dem representatives who overwhelmingly endorsed the new Liberal Democrat/Conservative coalition government at a Special Lib Dem Conference held in Birmingham on Sunday 16th May.

Wokingham Liberal Democrats are celebrating their success in last week's local elections. Not only did they successfully win the three seats they were defending, but they also won an extra Borough Council seat from the Conservatives in Loddon. Borough-wide, the Liberal Democrat share of the vote increased by nearly 5 per cent, whereas the Conservatives' share of the vote fell by almost 9 per cent.

Last night was the final of the three televised Leaders' debates. Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg, debated with Gordon Brown and David Cameron about the economy. Subjects discussed included breaking up the banks, creating more jobs and reinvigorating the British economy.

On Thursday 29th April from 8.30pm, BBC One will host the final live Prime Ministerial Debate of the General Election from the Midlands. Nick Clegg, Gordon Brown and David Cameron will again be going head to head in the run up to the General Election next Thursday.

An average of five polls conducted immediately after the Sky TV Leaders Election debate on Thursday night put Nick Clegg as the winner, with all instant polls showing him ahead of Gordon Brown. After the Foreign Affairs-led debate from Bristol dominated by issues like Iraq, immigration and climate change, Nick Clegg won 3 of the 5 polls on the night, building on his position after the first debate.

The second Party Leaders Debate is taking place this Thursday starting at 8pm on Sky News. Nick Clegg, Gordon Brown and David Cameron will again be going head to head in a TV debate in the run up to the General Election on May 6th, this time leading on Foreign Affairs.

The Green Party and Lib Dem candidates on Thursday 15th April signed up to a pledge to conduct a clean and fair General Election campaign. Marjory Bisset for the Greens and Prue Bray for the Liberal Democrats are urging the other candidates to also commit to running a clean campaign.

The polls following the first ever Party Leaders General Election debate on ITV are showing that Nick Clegg has won a convincing victory over David Cameron and Gordon Brown. The debate was the first ever Leaders debate during a UK General Election campaign, and the pollsters are giving it as a big victory for Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats.
