Wokingham Lib-Dems call for Government intervention in Ryeish Green School Decision
12.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 31st Aug 2007
Wokingham Liberal Democrat Councillors have written to the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families asking for a Government investigation into Wokingham Borough Council's decision to close Ryeish Green School.
Councillor Prue Bray (Leader of the Lib Dem Councillor Group and councillor for Winnersh ward) said, "We did everything we could to show the Tory Executive that closing Ryeish Green School is the wrong decision, but they wouldn't listen.
"I have written to the Government because many of the concerns I raised during the consultations were simply not acknowledged, let alone addressed.
Closing the school now is simply perverse, as CfBT have put forward a proposal to save the school. CfBT is not a fly-by-night organisation: it has just been entrusted by the government to run the national academy for gifted and talented children. Yet the Tories dismissed their proposal out of hand.
"It's clear that the Tories always intended to close the school and sell the land. They wouldn't listen to the reasoned arguments for keeping Ryeish Green School open. Closing the school will result in overcrowding in our other secondary schools, and added traffic congestion as pupils travel further to alternative schools.
"In closing Ryeish Green, the Tories have made a terrible mistake."
